Warts and Verrucas removal

Warts are non-cancerous skin growth cause by a viral infection. Since warts are caused by a virus, they are contagious. Majority of them are harmless. The viruses that cause warts are called human papilloma virus (HPV). Warts are usually the same colour as our normal skin and it has a rough surface, but they can be dark, flat or smooth. The appearance of the wart will depends where it is growing.

How do we get Warts

Warts are contagious and may be passed from individual to individual directly or indirectly. Wart takes several months to grow large from the first point of contact. Some individuals have antibodies against the wart virus. Wart virus occur more easily if the skin has a cut or abrasion. Therefore, children have a higher frequency of warts.

Recurrent of Warts

Wart can often reoccur. This may be because the old warts have shed viruses in the surrounding skin before they were treated. The best way to limit this is to treat new warts as soon as possible before they develop and shed the virus to surrounding areas of the skin.

Treatments:

Laser treatment of warts/verrucas is an effective alternative to traditional treatments and is particularly suitable for large or widespread warts and verrucas that have failed to respond to traditional treatments. Skin and Laser clinic Nd:Yag Laser for non ablative treatments and Erbium Laser for surgical verruca removal procedures.

      Nd:Yag Laser:

Nd:Yag laser light will destroy the blood supply to the wart or verruca without causing damage to the surrounding tissue. The laser energy heats up the wart, sealing its blood supply and kill the viral infection so the wart can no longer survive. If all of the blood supply is not killed, further treatment will be needed to ensure that the growth is killed. Course of 2-4 treatments may be recommended in weekly interval.

Alternatively an erbium laser can be used to gently remove the wart layer by layer.

      Er:Yag Laser:

The Er:YAG laser is a safe, very precise and most effective treatment for all types and sizes warts including large plantar verrucas, which would normally be surgically removed. Laser excision causes less bleeding, quick healing and results in less scarring. Postoperative healing occurred after 7 to 10 days.

Statistically warts appear in a variety of locations and have been successfully eliminated in 75% of patients after a single treatment. Approximately 14% of patients are non-responders to any available treatments.
